Tempest by Julie Cross

The year is 2009.  Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps– it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future. Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler.  Recruit… or kill him.

Across the Universe #1

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone – one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship – tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now, Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

I’ll start by saying that Revis is utterly brilliant. Across the Universe is by far one of the most thrilling reads I’ve come across in years. When I began reading, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I feared that the Sci-Fi quality would be too much for my liking. I was so very wrong. Revis balances science, romance, adventure, emotion, and murder in the most captivating way imaginable. With the turn of each page, I felt more attached to the characters and engrossed in the drama that surrounded them. WOW! It’s just that darn awesome!

In the beginning, readers experience cryo-freeze alongside Amy and her parents. I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nails; the emotion of it all was so intense. Revis paints a phenomenal picture of the ship and the characters that live within. Another memorable part for me is “the Season.” At first I stopped reading and sat there shocked. Can you imagine that happening in the world today? It would be equally as crazy. Geez. But the idea was unique and fitting for the story, I’ll say that. It sure added flavor to an already intense situation.

The ending was a complete shocker. I’m still stunned! Revis is a master storyteller, that’s for sure. Usually there is at least one thing I don’t like about a story but that isn’t true here. Beth covers all the bases, sending a captivating tale into the masses that offers something for every reader. I can’t wait to find out what happens next in “A Million Suns.”
