Banned Books Giveaway Hop
Welcome to the Banned Books Giveaway Hop hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and I Read Banned Books. As a reader and librarian, I believe that all books have a right to be read and enjoyed by everyone. With that said, I do agree that not everyone will like all of the books available to them. It’s our right as readers and free people to read whatever we choose when we choose. The idea that some peeps want certain titles removed from certain or all venues is insanity. So Banned Books Week is a time to speak out and give our support to authors, libraries, and our first amendment rights.
Over the past 10 years more than 4,400 books have been challenged. What does that say about our society? If that isn’t a horrifying number then this tidbit of numbers will be…
1,536 challenges due to “sexually explicit” material;
1,231 challenges due to “offensive language”;
977 challenges due to material deemed “unsuited to age group”;
553 challenges due to “violence”
370 challenges due to “homosexuality”
As proven in the recent drama surrounding Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, even ‘unbanning’ a book doesn’t make it easily accessible since the title is still being kept in a ‘secure’ location.
Celebrate your freedom to read by spreading the word about banned books. Read one today and share it with a friend.
In honor of Banned Books Week we are giving away a $10.00 Amazon Gift Card to one lucky winner.
