Waiting on Wednesday: 2 Captivating Reads

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

Hey there guys and gals. It’s time for another WOW post and this one has me wishing it was August. What could possibly make me wish that? You’ll see and I’m sure you’ll feel the same way.

First up is…Survive by Alex Morel.

The summary really grabbed me. Survivals stories regardless of the angle have always been very intriguing to me. I hope this one lives up to the intensity the summary dishes out. Jane seems like a really interesting character and I’m dying to know why she wants to attempt suicide. Survive sounds like it could be an emotional read. What do you guys think?

Next up is…The Blood Keeper by Tessa Gratton.

I really enjoyed the dark engaging story Gratton created with Blood Magic, the first installment of the Blood Journals series.  Naturally, I’m as happy as a barrel of monkeys to read the second installment and find out where the story goes next. Even though the cover really doesn’t match the first installment I’m eager to see how/if it plays a part in the plot. Love the tagline too. Creepy…and captivating!!

What fabulous reads are you waiting on?

Teaser Tuesday & Top Ten Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

    • Grab your current read
    • Open to a random page
    • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
    • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
    • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser.

Transcendence by C.J. Omololu

Release date: June 5, 2012

My fingers tremble, and for a moment I fear I will drop the coins and pendant before they land with a soft clink in the palm of the masked executioner. I find myself surprised that his waiting hand also trembles, and I glance up into his dark brown eyes, which are the only visible parts of his face.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. It’s a great way to share your top ten lists with other book loving folks.

This is my first go round on Top Ten so here goes nothing. This week the topic is…

Twisting Time: Nightwaves scary tales for after dark

Twisting Time

Last week, I worked with one of our teen volunteers/readers in our YA section and quickly began a conversation about books and book covers. It was great to get some honest feedback about the items in our YA collection. Honestly, we have made great strides in updating the type of reads that grace the shelf. I showed her a few covers and asked what her opinion was on them. The older titles (Ex: Nightwaves) got a Bleh response rather quickly. Can’t say I blame her because I wouldn’t buy it either. Next, I grabbed one of P.C. Cast’s House of Night books and she really like those. I don’t think they’re bad covers but they’re just not high on my ‘OMG that’s my favorite cover ever’ list. So I had to feature Nightwaves: Scary Tales for After Dark on TT this week.

Nightwaves is a collection of horror stories that sound pretty interesting. The cover, on the other hand, does little to provoke readership. The second cover is definitely my favorite. For a 1992 release, it’s kind of interesting, with a slight spooky feel. The red really pops off the cover.  The 1990 release leaves so much to be desired. Heck! I’m not even sure what to make of the image. Well, not totally anyway. LOL

Summary 1

A collection of horror stories features a spirit hunter from ancient Egypt, two ghosts at a dangerous dam, a woman who sells her husband’s soul to the devil, and a mad killer in the woods.

Summary 2

Tom builds a radio that tells tomorrow’s news today. A music teacher sells her orphan students’ souls to keep her youth. A spell found in an old magic book turns an ordinary dog into a beast of prey.

What do you think about the covers? Which one would you check out at the library?
