Meet Sarah and David.

Once upon a time they met and fell in love. But now they’re on the verge of divorce and going to couples’ counseling. On a routine trip to their counselor, they notice a few odd things – the lack of cars on the highway, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counselor, Dr. Kelly, is ripping out her previous client’s throat.

Meet the Zombies.

Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But, just because there are zombies, doesn’t mean your other problems go away. If the zombies don’t eat their brains, they might just kill each other.

Married With Zombies is a heartwarming tale of terror set during the time of the zombie uprising.

The big heart and the tagline (the couple who slays together stays together) might make zombie lovers shy away from Married with Zombies, but that would be a huge mistake. In addition to comical (in a macabre way) situations that include seeing your marriage counselor eating the patients that were scheduled before you and conversations about killing people you know, Married with Zombies delivers tension, edge-of-your-seat excitement, and one scene that is almost so heart-rending that it will stay with me for a while.

Sarah and David are going through the motions that make it appear they’re trying to save their marriage but it’s nothing more than a show because not even a zombie plague can bring this marriage back from the dead. Or can it? When the world goes to hell, the couple realizes they only have each other to rely on, and the zombie apocalypse brings out traits in each of them that make them shine in each other’s eyes.

Even in the beginning, when Sarah and Dave are bickering at each other over everything, they’re likable main characters. Their situation is real and plenty of people can probably relate to reaching the point of having a mental meltdown just because your significant other decided to load the CD changer with all his tunes. Once the dead start walking (and eating), Sarah and David still keep things real, and that’s what gives Married with Zombies so much power. These two aren’t bad-ass zombie killers; they’re normal people like you and me. They’re scared and they make mistakes, but the only other options are eating a bullet or letting the zombies feast on them.

Here’s a little peek at Sarah as she gets the hang of zombie killing She’s not real happy since she just recently became the owner of a wet butt because her loving husband didn’t put the seat down.

Out of pure instinct and a hefty dose of luck, I flattened against the back wall as his bulky body careened past me. His already shredded forehead hit the thin bottom seat of the toilet with a clang and he let out a whining groan.

I don’t know what came over me as I looked down at our fat, piece of shit of a neighbor lying half in my toilet, the offending seat Dave had left for me still flipped up overhead. I certainly didn’t think about what I was going to do, I just did it. Dropping down, I started slamming the toilet down against his skull.

“Put. The. Toilet. Seat. Down. David!” I accentuated each word with a crushing bang of the seat.

I didn’t stop until I heard Dave’s voice outside the door.

If you’re looking for an exciting time packed with a few laughs to make the end of the world a little more bearable then Married with Zombies is exactly what you’re looking for.

Other books in the series include Flip This Zombie, Eat Slay Love, and Shambling with the Stars: A Living with the Dead Short Story, which takes a look at how others are handling the zombie apocalypse. You can find out more about the author at www.jessepetersen.net.

Immortal Hope by Claire Ashgrove

Immortal Hope: the Curse of the Templars by Claire Ashgrove
ARC : 355 pages
Publisher: TOR Romance (January 3, 2012)

Centuries ago, Templar knights defied the archangels and unearthed the copper scroll that revealed the locations of the gates to hell. Cursed for their forbidden act, they now roam the earth, protecting mankind from evil. But darkness stalks them, and battles they fight bring them ever closer to eternal damnation. One promise remains to give them salvation—the return of the seraphs.

Embittered by his purpose, Merrick du Loire must honor an ancient pact and bring peace to his cousin’s soul, releasing him from the clutches of their enemy. When he stumbles upon history professor Anne MacPherson, he discovers that she possesses a sacred artifact that marks her as a seraph. Duty demands he set aside his personal quest and locate the knight she’s fated to heal. As Merrick struggles with conflicting oaths, Anne arouses buried hope and sparks forbidden desire that challenges everything he’s sworn to uphold.

Anne has six weeks to complete her thesis on the Knights Templar. When Merrick takes her to the Templar stronghold, he presents her with all she needs—and awakens a soul-deep ache that he alone can soothe. Yet loving Merrick comes with a price. If she admits she is destined for him, her gift of foresight predicts his death.

I’m a long-time fan of historical fiction so it’s no surprise that Immortal Hope was very appealing to me, but the romance aspect kinda scared me a little. Romance has never been a favorite of mine but Claire Ashgrove has definitely changed my thoughts on the genre as a whole after devouring her latest tale. From the very first page, I was immersed in a world that took my breathe away and never let me go. I simply couldn’t put Immortal Hope down, and when I finished reading, I wanted the next book in the series right then and there.

The characters are exciting and very well developed, keeping you enthralled in every detail as the story progresses. Anne is a kick-ass heroine and a seraph that can barely be contained in the pages of this amazingly brilliant story. Merrick – oh my goodness – he is definitely the hottest thing since…umm…well dang, he’s just super awesome and definitely a character that is totally unforgettable. Together, they make Immortal Hope live up to its title and so much more. The romantic heat between them is startling, leaving you begging for more. The relationship grows in a realistic way so there’s none of that insta-love crap here.

The historical qualities of Immortal Hope are well researched, giving a real-world feel from beginning to end. Ashgrove really did her homework and you can feel her passion for history as you delve deeper into Anne and Merrick’s journey. Coupling history with the paranormal was a brilliant twist, giving readers that enjoy paranormal, romance, or historical fiction a tasty morsel to gnaw on that is sure to please.

Ashgrove has made a lover of romance out of me and I’m happy to say I will definitely be stalking her future works, and I will continue to read this amazing new series. Immortal Hope is packed with intense action, immortality, a romance that will make your heart skip a beat or two, and the most intoxicating descriptions a reader could hope for. The next installment in the series is Immortal Surrender. I’m dying to find out what happens next. I highly recommend that everyone add this captivating read to their reading pile. I’ll definitely be reading more of Claire’s works.

“You always save the best lies for yourself.” – Amador Lockdown

Something has moved into the Amador Hotel. Hector, Marcos, Bev, and Tony of the Paranormal Posse are called in to either debunk the haunting or get rid of whatever is causing the problems. With the surprise arrival of Hector’s son, he tries to keep his professional and personal lives separate, but whatever is haunting the Amador Hotel has other plans.

It’s no secret how much I enjoy the supernatural. I’m a sucker for all of the paranormal TV shows, regardless how cheesy they get sometimes. I just can’t resist a good spooky story. I’m sure we have all heard something go Bump! in the night or a strange sound that sent chills down our spines as we secretly wondered what the heck it was, right? Well, Russell brings that creepy feel to life in Amador Lockdown.

Russell starts off this creepy paranormal tale with the Paranormal Posse leading a tour group through  an old graveyard, setting the tone for the entire story. As the team is called in to investigate, and hopefully debunk, the strange happenings at the Amador Hotel, it becomes quite clear that they may be in over their heads. Parts of the story had me thinking about Rose Red and a line about houses being alive and if we listen we can hear houses breathe…this line is fitting for Amador Lockdown too.

Overall, I enjoyed the riveting plot and the eery feel of the ghost hunt. The historical quality of the Amador Hotel was well researched, highlighting some of its unique history. Readers that enjoy Gretchen McNeil’s Possess and Kendare Blakes’s Anna Dressed in Blood will definitely find Amador Lockdown appealing. It’s a fast read that is simply too hauntingly good to put down.
