Blood Journals Series # 1

Everywhere Silla Kennicott turns she sees blood. She can’t stop thinking about her parents alleged murder-suicide. She is consumed by a book filled with spells that arrives mysteriously in the mail. The spells share one common ingredient: blood, and Silla is more than willing to cast a few. What’s a little spilled blood if she can uncover the truth? And then there’s Nick—the new guy at school who makes her pulse race. He has a few secrets of his own and is all too familiar with the lure of blood magic. Drawn together by a combination of fate and chemistry, Silla and Nick must find out who else in their small Missouri town knows their secret and will do anything to take the book and magic from Silla.

As you peruse your local bookstore shelves, you can definitely see that the paranormal genre is a focal point in the literary world, and finding a good paranormal read can be a daunting task. Look no further because Gratton has produced a satisfying novel that will surely please. “Blood Magic” offers more than the typical adventure into the genre, giving the reader a lot to gnaw on as the plot unfolds. Gratton’s “Blood Magic” is a twisting tale that unfolds in layers, as the characters’ journey into the world of blood magic progresses. From the moment the main character, Silla, receives a book of spells that her father had written, the intensity increases, giving birth to a fantastic and mysterious adventure. Silla is lured into the world of magic, learning much more than how to cast a spell. There are so many levels to this novel that you can easily get sucked into the characters’ lives, personalities, and the world of blood magic.

The novel is told from several points of view, which can be unsatisfying for some readers. As the point of view shifts from Silla Kenicott to her neighbor, Nick Pardee, you feel the intensity of their personalities take hold of the story, sucking you in to each and every detail of the twisting plotline. The third POV is told from an unusual, yet intriguing source, a diary from the early 1900’s. This viewpoint was as enthralling as, and in some cases, more so than the present-day adventure. The detailed descriptions of the time period were vivid and realistic, adding a dramatic quality to an already intense story. Jumping back and forth between the journal entries and the present day story was fantastic, Gratton gives you just enough of one before dropping you into the other, keeping you on the edge of your seat and begging for more. The climatic intersecting of the parallel storylines is a moment that is both shocking and unbelievable.

Overall, I found “Blood Magic” to be a mesmerizing read that is a fitting for both young adults and adult alike. Gratton definitely weaved a dark, mysterious and gripping tale that sets her novel apart from others in its genre. There are moments that are not for the faint of heart, but these moments are rare and last mere seconds. Readers that enjoy a gripping tale filled with magic, mystery, and adventure will definitely enjoy Gratton’s debut novel. “Blood Magic” is the first book in the Blood Journals series. More Please!

But Raj might be the only one powerful enough to save Gray from fading away forever.

Bloody Valentine by Lucy Swing: One by one the girls of Hollow High disappear and when Bailey receives a heart-shaped box filled with chocolates she might be next.

Sweet Torture by Kira Saito: Sixteen year old Claudia Bernstein is obsessed with two things: chocolate and Dante Torres. When Claudia finds herself in the middle of a cruel prank she decides to take revenge. But is revenge enough? Or will she finally realize that her own worst enemy is herself?

The Girl with Three Heads by Suz Korb: Kate wakes up on the morning of the Death by Chocolate fundraiser event to discover she has two extra heads. She eventually learns that the head on her right shoulder is Zeus while the head that’s magically implanted on her left shoulder belongs to Hera. Will Kate ever rid herself of these two extra heads? Will she ever get to experience her first kiss from a guy without extra-head-situation interruptions? Join Kate as she struggles to survive being flung into the Underworld and also landing upon Mount Olympus. Just because she’s got two extra craniums, doesn’t mean either noggin is an extra set of useful brains.

Death By Chocolate truly delivers 6 deliciously enthralling paranormal tales, blending the sweetest treats with bubbling romances. Honestly, anthologies are hit-and-miss for me but this one takes the cake. DBC is a fast and enjoyable read, with something for every paranormal reader out there. All six short stories provide the perfect blend of paranormal and romance, and brilliantly work in chocolate treats. Across the board, each author managed to describe the chocolate treats in such a mouth-watering way that you simply had to have one. That’s wicked cruel of you gals, by the way.

I highly recommend this anthology to everyone. Yep, everyone. Regardless of what genre you read, you’ll love this book. The romance is light and romantic, the paranormal aspects are unique and fun, and the chocolate…you can’t resist the loving call of chocolate. Death By Chocolate is a fast-paced, fun read that can easily be devoured in one sitting and leave you begging for more. Bravo, ladies!

Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey

Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey
Hardback : 326 pages
Publisher: Philomel Books (December 8, 2011)

Lenzi hears voices and has visions – gravestones, floods, a boy with steel gray eyes. Her boyfriend, Zak, can’t help, and everything keeps getting louder and more intense. Then Lenzi meets Alden, the boy from her dreams, who reveals that she’s a reincarnated Speaker – someone who can talk to and help lost souls – and that he has been her Protector for centuries.

Now Lenzi must choose between her life with Zak and the life she is destined to lead with Alden. But time is running out: a malevolent spirit is out to destroy Lenzi, and he will kill her if she doesn’t make a decision soon.

I love books set in the south, especially those set in Texas. Shattered Souls fits on both counts. I was amazed by the level of history Lindsey brought to this fantastic tale, too. The Great Storm of 1900 in Galveston is a memorable event in Texas history and using this event as the basis of Lenzi and Alden’s story makes the plot truly come alive for me. This event is mentioned on numerous occasions, each one more emotional than the last. The historical and past life tale was beautifully executed, keeping me enthralled in every last detail, and leaving me emotionally attached to the characters.

There are plenty of creepy moments in this exciting story. Lindsey brings ghost stories, exorcisms, and paranormal entities to a whole new level. At one point, Lenzi is attacked by a malevolent spirit that is hellbent on making her life miserable. The attack is utterly creepy and definitely got my adrenaline pumping. If a faceless, bodiless voice told me to surrender to it, I’d freak the heck out. Like I said, it’s super creepy!

I really enjoyed the way Lindsey brought the story to life with Speakers and Protectors, Hindered and Malevolent, under the watchful eye of the IC. Shattered Souls is beautifully written with vivid and exciting characters that bring their intriguingly eerie story to life. Again, the historical aspects of the story prove that she did a fantastic job staying true to original events. I highly recommend Shattered Souls to readers that enjoyed Possess by Gretchen McNeil, Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake, and The name of the Star by Maureen Johnson. Exorcism, no resolution, no loss of life — 70 points — Shattered Souls — PRICELESS! A must-read.
